The transition from the military to the civilian workforce for a retiring veteran, as well as a career change for someone who has been employed for a while, can be daunting. Here are a few of the steps in the transition process.
- Start planning early. Take advantage of all the resources available, such as those offered through the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
- Take a self-assessment and Research career fields. Once you know your skills and interests, it's time to research different career fields.
- Network with people in your target industries.
- Update your resume and portfolio and Start your job search. There are many different ways to find jobs, such as online job boards, company websites, and networking.
- Prepare for interviews. This means conducting research on the company for which you are interviewing, formulating your answers to common interview questions and dressing professionally.
- Be patient. The transition from military to civilian life can take time. Don't get discouraged if you don't find a job right away. Keep networking and applying for jobs, and eventually you'll find the right opportunity.

- One-on-one guidance. This can assist veterans assess their skills and interests, identify career goals, and develop a plan to achieve those goals. This can be especially helpful for veterans who are struggling to transition to civilian life or who are not sure where to start.
- Access to specialized knowledge. Independent career transition consultants often have specialized knowledge of the civilian workforce and the skills that are in demand
- Networking. They can help veterans to connect with potential employers and to get their foot in the door.
- Advocacy. Independent career transition consultants can advocate on behalf of veterans to potential employers. They can help to explain the unique skills and experiences that veterans bring to the table and to overcome any biases that employers may have about veterans.

- Strategy development (positioning, targeting).
- Getting interviews (contacts, advice, approaches).
- Interviewing and Salary Negotiating advice, guidance and preparation.
- On-going Personal Support via Zoom, phone and email as required.
